Stress-free London moving

The Moving House Checklist

Eight weeks from first box to final key, the Blue Sky way. The same chronological plan our move managers walk every London client through — so nothing gets forgotten, and move day is the easy part.

Step 01

8 weeks before

Plan the move, lock the date

  • Book a free home survey with a London removals company — get a fixed written quote, not a day-rate guess.
  • Confirm your completion or tenancy end date in writing with your solicitor or landlord.
  • Decide what's moving, what's being donated, and what needs short or long-term storage.
  • Measure large furniture against doorways, stairwells and lift dimensions at the new property.
  • If you're moving inside the ULEZ or Congestion Charge zone, flag parking restrictions to your mover early.
Step 02

6 weeks before

Declutter room by room

  • Work one room at a time — kitchen, loft and garage first, they hide the most.
  • Book a charity collection or council bulky-waste pickup for anything you're not taking.
  • Start using up freezer food, opened toiletries and cleaning products you don't want to transport.
  • Photograph valuable items and electronics for your insurance record.
Step 03

4 weeks before

Admin & address changes

  • Set up Royal Mail redirection (allow 5 working days minimum).
  • Notify: bank, employer, GP, dentist, DVLA, HMRC, TV Licence, pension and insurance providers.
  • Transfer or cancel: broadband, gas, electricity, water, council tax, contents insurance.
  • Update your address with online retailers, subscriptions and your electoral roll entry.
  • Confirm packing service dates and contents insurance cover with your mover.
Step 04

2 weeks before

Pack the non-essentials

  • Begin packing books, out-of-season clothes, decor and anything you won't need before move day.
  • Label every box: room, contents, and 'fragile' or 'open first'.
  • Dismantle flat-pack furniture you're confident reassembling; leave the rest to the crew.
  • Apply for a parking suspension or dispensation with your London council if loading bays aren't available.
  • Arrange childcare and pet care for move day — both go more smoothly out of the house.
Step 05

1 week before

Essentials, valuables, last admin

  • Pack a 'first night' box: kettle, mugs, tea, phone chargers, toiletries, medication, bedding and a change of clothes.
  • Keep passports, jewellery, wills and hard drives with you — never on the van.
  • Defrost the freezer 24 hours before move day.
  • Confirm arrival time, parking and access with your move manager.
  • Take final meter readings the morning of the move and photograph them.
Step 06

Move day

Hand over, walk through, breathe

  • Greet the crew, walk them through the property and point out anything fragile or 'do not load'.
  • Keep the kettle, loo roll and first-night box back until the very end.
  • Do a final room-by-room sweep — under beds, top of wardrobes, attic hatch, garden shed.
  • Photograph the empty property, leave keys with the agent and lock up.
  • At the new home: direct the crew room-by-room, check inventory, sign off the job sheet.
Step 07

First week in

Settle in properly

  • Test smoke alarms, boiler, hot water and heating before the crew leaves if possible.
  • Register with a local GP, dentist and update your driving licence address with the DVLA.
  • Locate stopcock, fuse box and gas meter — photograph the meter readings on day one.
  • Introduce yourself to immediate neighbours; in flats, find the building manager.
  • Book a return collection of packing crates and unwanted boxes with your removals company.

FAQ

London moving questions, answered

When should I book a removals company in London?+

Six to eight weeks before move day is ideal, especially for end-of-month Fridays and summer weekends, which book out first across London. For smaller flat moves, 2–3 weeks is usually workable.

Do I need to pack myself, or can the movers pack?+

Both options are standard. A full packing service (we pack everything the day before) saves 1–2 days of work and is fully insured. Fragile-only packing covers kitchen, glassware and art while you handle the rest.

What can't go on the removals van?+

Paint, petrol, gas bottles, fireworks, ammunition and anything flammable are excluded by insurance. Keep passports, jewellery, cash, prescription medication and important documents with you personally.

How do parking and ULEZ work for London moves?+

We check your street for parking restrictions, loading bays and red routes when we survey. Where needed we apply for a council parking suspension. ULEZ and CCZ charges are built into your fixed quote — no surprises on the day.
